Chimney counter flashing

Chimney Flashing

Chimney Flashing (Sheet Metal)

Chimney flashing (also known as chimney surround, roof penetration flashing, or apron) is a set of custom-shaped sheet metal elements designed to seal the area where a chimney penetrates the roof structure. This is one of the most complex and critical junctions on a roof, requiring high precision in manufacturing and installation.

SIA "Akvilon" manufactures sheet metal chimney flashings to individual dimensions and the exact pitch angle of your roof. To place an order, you need to provide the precise external dimensions of the chimney and the roof slope angle.

Importance of Proper Chimney Flashing

A well-executed chimney flashing performs three critically important functions:

  • Waterproofing: Reliably protects the under-roof space from rain and meltwater ingress at the roof-chimney junction, preventing leaks, rot of rafters, and damage to insulation.
  • Structural Support: Provides rigidity and stability to the roofing material around the opening, compensating for thermal expansion of the chimney and roof.
  • Fire Safety: Is part of the fire safety system. The flashing design and materials used must comply with regulatory requirements (e.g., EN 1856), ensuring necessary safe distances from the hot chimney surface to combustible roof materials (rafters, battens, insulation).

Improperly designed or installed flashing will inevitably lead to leaks, deterioration of the roof structure, and, most dangerously, can create a fire hazard.

Construction and Materials

We produce flashings that ensure maximum reliability and durability:

  • Seamed Joints: All connections between flashing elements are made using folded seams (locking joints), guaranteeing a watertight and strong construction.
  • Rigidity and Non-Combustibility: The materials used are non-combustible and possess sufficient rigidity to maintain their shape and provide multi-level water protection (apron and counter-flashing principle).
  • Material Selection: Choosing the right material is critical for the flashing's longevity, especially for heating chimneys. We offer:
    • Galvanized Steel (ZN): An economical option suitable for ventilation shafts or gas boiler chimneys with low flue gas temperatures. Service life is limited by the zinc coating's resistance to corrosion and temperature.
    • Polymer-Coated Steel (PE, Pural): An optimal choice for price/aesthetics ratio. Allows matching the color to the roof (RAL catalog). Suitable for most chimneys, but the polymer's lifespan may decrease under constant exposure to high temperatures and aggressive condensate (especially from solid fuel boilers).
    • Stainless Steel (SS, e.g., AISI 304): The recommended material for all heating chimneys, especially for solid fuel boilers, fireplaces, and stoves. It offers maximum resistance to high temperatures (up to 800-900°C depending on the grade) and aggressive acidic condensate, ensuring the highest durability of the flashing.
  • Dimensions: We manufacture to any size, from standard (380x380 mm) to very large (e.g., 2060x940 mm) and other custom dimensions.
  • Certification: Compliance with production process control requirements (Certificate No. 1805/2011).

What is needed for ordering:

For precise manufacturing, we require the following parameters:

  • External chimney dimensions (length × width in mm)
  • Roof slope angle (in degrees)
  • Chimney type (heating / ventilation / gas boiler)
  • Desired flashing material

Installation Specifics

Installing chimney flashing is a complex operation requiring professional skills. It's crucial to ensure proper fitting of all elements to the chimney and roofing material, reliable sealing of joints, and compliance with fire safety regulations. Often, a multi-level waterproofing system using base and counter flashings is employed.

If needed, our specialists can come and install the chimney flashing.
